When I was an adolescent my daddy took me to a poetry open mic night called, Spread Love and Spoken Word. There is where I blossomed into the phenomenal woman you know today. I started writing poetry when I was 8 years old and started performing with people 3 and 4 times my age, when I was 9. Every Wednesday I was on stage ready to read my soul to strangers, and my daddy. If it wasn’t for my daddy I wouldn’t be the woman I am today. Today, we as a society, don’t realize the importance of a father to a daughter. I don’t think we even realize the importance of a father to a child period. A father is a child’s first hero. With great power comes great responsibility. How men in today’s society handle that responsibility determines how long a child believes they have super powers too. Thanks to my father’s belief in my abilities, even the ones I didn’t know I had, I was able to learn to fly without wings. I am an African American woman. I know who my father is and he was a prominent figure in my life. Unfortunately, in the black neighborhoods a large percentage of women and men can’t say that. Our men have forgotten to put on their suits and be the hero. They in some cases, refuse to take responsibility. Too often our women have to take over that role and do both jobs. This has to change! We at The U World inc. understand the power of a single mother even when she doesn’t know it herself. We also understand the importance of a father. We know that unity starts at home. We understand the importance of bringing back the original nuclear family. However when that can’t be achieved, we know the importance of helping your fellow man or woman. It truly does take a village to raise a child. Join our movement. Let’s put the U in Us and turn our neighborhoods back into communities, one family at a time.
